Why is there Teflon and Kynar- PVDF long lead times
Throughout the last year, the industry has experienced more challenges than I have come across within my three decades experience. In the past I have seen sharp price increases, and I have seen several shortages, and delivery issues stemming from plastic resin allocations through plastic resin vendors. This is definitely the first occasion I have seen all these issues at one time.
PTFE Rod (TFE) and PVDF are both on allocation.
This pair of resins are in short supply. The PTFE Sheet product PTFE (TFE) along with Kynar manufacturing requires a mineral called Fluorspar which is mined in Mongolia and China. The world demand for this mineral has risen significantly, and the supply has tightened. PTFE materials have high temperature resistance, excellent chemical resistance and really low co-efficient of friction (slippery) and is utilised within a good deal of purposes from non-stick fry kitchenware to ptfe tape for use at home. This particular mineral is actually the important raw material inside the manufacturing of fluoropolymers, fluorolubricants and quite a few refrigerants. This increased demand paired with general shortage of raw materials is responsible for a dramatic price increase (almost double over the past year), shortages, and we expect both these factors to continue in the near future.
